Ponk Vada stall, Surat

Spending a few days at grandmother’s place in Surat. Mom took me to a ponk shop she had bought from earlier. It was at ghod dod road (map location). And we enjoyed a plate of Jain Ponk vadas.

Here’s a video I took of that place,

Usually my videos are fairly amateur but I am happy with how this one turned out. The audio has been added later on as voice over, but the effect seems good.

Ponk is quite an interesting food delicacy I find. Very nutritious and natural-tasting. It amazes me how these traditional recipes might have developed. What would be the story behind it?

At home we had Ponk with the spicy sev and sugar balls. It is such an interesting combination.

Traditional Ponk mix..

How did such an interesting combination of tastes develop? India is so amazing in it’s food cuisine depth!

It is also typical of many Gujarati dishes which brings together all the different tastes on the plate.

For example, Jalebi  (sweet) and faafda (salty) is always paired with green chillis (spicy) and pappaya salad (sour).

Have you ever had Ponk? What’s your favourite Ponk recipe?

I had also blogged about the first time I came across Ponk. That was my first visit to Surat, only a transit. I was on my way to a small town called Vyaara, and we came across the Ponk stop on the way. There we also got Ponk buttermilk and Ratalu bhajiyas.

I think there may exist a much more elaborate spread of Ponk dishes than I have so far encountered. Much to explore in this country. Love you India. 🙂
